THE ONE WHO PROTECTS US

In 1992 Chinese photographer Lu Nan moved into Chinese Shaanxi province to portray some villages where most of the inhabitants share a strange and exotic belief for Chinese standards: Catholicism. His work was compiled in a book: "On the road, a portrait of Catholicism in China."

Chinese director Shi Qiurong fascinated by the atmosphere captured in Lu Nan’s pictures decides to follow his footsteps to better understand the beliefs of this people and their way of living.

At a time when Chinese society is plunged into a new market economy many urbanites are seeking new forms of spirituality, often in rural areas where society is changing much more slowly. The one who protects us is a portrait of Catholicism in China from the perspective of two artists that regard this faith unaware of its roots but searching for it’s meaning nowadays.
