CHINA INSIDE MY SUITCASE
china en la maleta

Few people know that 70% of Chinese in Europe come from Zhejiang province, a place with a long tradition of immigration.

In this same province there is a very strange island where only elderly retirees and children under 12 live. These children that were originally born in Europe were sent back to China by their parents when they were babies, to let their grandparents take care of them. After 12 these children go back to join the parents abroad.

Xiao Lan is one of these children. His parents, owners of two shops in Madrid, sent him back to China 10 years ago when he was just 14 months. His short life has evolved on this island with his grandparents and other children in his same situation. He has met his parents once a year. Now he has grown up, it’s time he joins his parents abroad.

We start the story on the island, just before Xiao Lan intends to leave for a journey back to Spain. We will get to know his origins and the place where he has grown up. We’ll accompany him on his journey back to Spain, and through his perspective we’ll get to know the collective and individual psychology of Chinese immigration in Europe, their needs and aspirations.
